Regional Caretaker Networks

Our goal is to maintain an active and supportive network of Caretakers across Canada, with every IBA assigned a lead volunteer, who is assisted by other citizen scientists and volunteer experts.

Caretaker Networks are currently underway in every province of Canada. While each program has a slightly different administrative structure, most of these programs are run by provincial nature conservation organizations, with varying levels of support and involvement from the Canadian IBA Program co-partners, Bird Studies Canada and Nature Canada.  In four provinces, the program is either led or co-led by the local Bird Studies Canada office.

Provincial IBA Programs are recruiting Caretakers, enlisting community and government support for IBA conservation, and overseeing the review of IBA site summary information in each province.

All of these provinces are at different stages in implementing the IBA Program, and we hope to gain participation from remaining provinces and territories soon. This is an exciting time, when your contributions will help shape and improve the program’s delivery in unique ways in each region.
