Site Description
This site is located in the Hudson's Bay region of Québec and encompasses La Grande Rivière de la Baleine and its tributaries. The river, which has its source at Lac Bienville, is 370 km in length. The Coats and Denys rivers are its two major tributaries. In some places the river runs through deep valleys with steep rocky slopes. The river has about 30 sections of rapids covering 10% of the river. The coastal Cree and Inuit communities of Kuujjuarapik and Whapmagoostui are the closest settlements.
Birds
The Grande Rivière de la Baleine basin is an important breeding area for the nationally endangered Harlequin Duck (eastern population). In 1991and 1992, there were minimums of 27 and 32 individuals found breeding along this river system. This is about 2% of the eastern Harlequin Duck population.

Three pairs of Golden Eagles nest on cliffs along the rivers.
